Our Story

A studio built on patience, clay and the belief that making something by hand is one of the oldest forms of human joy.

Founded 2014

Clay in the Old City Spirit

Pottery Jerusalem was founded in 2014 by Esther Kahn, a Jerusalem-born ceramicist who trained under a master potter in Kyoto before returning home to open a studio in the neighbourhood she grew up in.

The studio sits in a renovated stone building on Yoel Moshe Salomon — a pedestrian laneway dating from the 19th century that has been home to artists, jewellers and craftspeople for generations. Esther chose the space because of its high ceilings, natural light and the deep sense of continuity it carries. In Jerusalem, craft feels ancient even when it is new.

Today the studio hosts over 40 weekly workshop sessions across all skill levels, runs a two-year ceramic arts residency programme for Israeli artists and maintains a gallery showing work by studio potters and alumni.

Every instructor is a practising ceramicist with a minimum of 5 years' teaching experience.

All clay is locally sourced from Israeli suppliers whenever possible.

All pieces are fired in our on-site gas kiln — no outsourced firing.

Accessible sessions available — please contact us in advance for adaptive needs.
